Dalmatians - Pictures - History
Dalmatians are said to have originated in Croatia. Spotted dogs were widely-spread in this region and some material evidence speaks in favor of this version. However, it is not completely proved that Croatia is the true homeland of the breed.
Dogs similar in appearance to Dalmatians are believed to have lived in Egypt. Drawings found in ancient tombs confirm the fact that Dalmatian-like dogs were used as companions and hunting dogs.
Dalmatians - Pictures - Coach Dogs
Great Britain played a decisive role in perfecting the breed. These dogs were the favorites of the nobility. Their brilliant appearance, powers of endurance, and liking for horses made Dalmatians wonderful coach dogs. They accompanied their masters along the way and were always ready to defend them from criminals and animals.
Besides, Dalmatians were indispensable during stops. They guarded property better than some of the servants, who often fell asleep after a long journey. Dalmatians, also called Coach Dogs, were not easily distracted from their duties. Their presence made robbers keep away from a carriage.
Naturally enough, the Dalmatian's appearance was to a certain extent predisposed by their activities. Since Dalmatians had to fight sometimes, their owners preferred to crop ears. Long, hound-like ears might have been easily injured.
The size of the Dalmatian was much more important for the British than it may seem at first sight. The dog had to run under the carriage or near it. To perfectly fit the height of the axle the Dalmatian was bred down slightly.

Another famous name of the Dalmatian is "The Fire House Dog." The Dalmatian was used as a ratter in fire houses and sometimes saw firemen off running near a coach. The tradition to keep Dalmatians in firehouses spread to the USA. In fact, it is still alive.

Nowadays, the Dalmatian's basic function is a pet. However, you will not see a Dalmatian spending his day idling. This active dog is good in agility, flyball, canine freestyle, and in therapy work. Dalmatians can also be used as watchdogs.
